Saint Francis of Assisi, Our Patron Saint
Saint Francis of Assisi is a medieval mystic, a contemplative of evangelizing action, and a model for ecological spirituality. His songs of “Sister Moon and Brother Sun” and “Prayer for Peace” make him loved and sung by all.
Saint Francis wandered through the cities, villages and hamlets, and began
to preach with increasing perfection, not merely using learned words of human wisdom, but through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, most confidently proclaiming the Kingdom of God.
In 1980, Pope John Pall II, declared him Patron Saint of animals and the environment/ecology. Saint Francis of Assisi, lover of all creation, champion of justice, patron saint of animals and the environment, founded the Franciscan Order. Through example, Saint Francis reminds us that we are called to bring about justice and peace in our world, end violence and war, poverty and oppression, and protect our fragile planet. St. Francis believed in peaceful dialogue with all our brothers and sisters. He calls us to be instruments of peace and healing by turning from weapons of violence to acts of love. “Happy are those who endure in peace”.
